GridLAB-D is designed to enhance how we model and study modern energy systems. GridLAB-D is a system simulation and analysis tool that provides valuable information to engineers who design and operate power systems and to utilities that wish to take advantage of the latest power system technologies. It incorporates advanced modeling techniques, with high-performance algorithms to deliver the latest in end-use load modeling technology.
GridLAB-D is couples power system models with end-use load, market, reliability, communications, and many other models. The integration of the models is different from other attempts to integrate multiple models because it does not place the powerflow solution at the center of the system model and treat the other models as a boundary condition. Instead, GridLAB-D integrates the solution to all the models through an advanced solver. As a result, GridLAB-D is capable to simulating many behaviors that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to model.
GridLAB-D was designed as an open source system. The source code that makes up GridLAB-D is freely available to anyone. People all over the world can add to GridLAB-D, fix bugs, make improvements, or suggest improvements. The key advantages of an open-source system are:
- users can make contributions in their areas of expertise,
- the implementation is transparent to all, and
- validation throughout the design and development process draws from all participants ensuring a high standard of quality and accuracy.
